Swapan Gupta

Swapan Gupta (1945-2021) was born in British India (now Bangladesh). He received secondary education from Calcutta Blind School and post-secondary education from Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission College. During a musical soiree at the college in1965 his singing impressed upon Debabrata Biswas, the famous exponent of Tagore Songs. Biswas took him under his tutelage for 10 years till 1975. Gupta was visually impaired but this did not hinder his daily living tasks including his singing. He was a beloved and well-respected performer of Tagore songs since the late 1960s. He was conferred the Sangeet Mahasamman award by the State Government of West Bengal in 2015. Gupta passed away on October 20, 2021 in Kolkata, India at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a battle with cancer.
