German-Dutch actress (born August 19, 1863 in Rotterdam, Netherlands – died August 30, 1937 in Berlin, Germany) The daughter of a German merchant and his Dutch wife, Sandrock grew up mostly in Berlin. At age 15, she made her stage debut in Berlin. After engagements in Meiningen, Vienna, Moscow and Budapest, she had her breakthrough in 1889 at the Theater and der Wien in Vienna. She remained in Vienna until 1905, playing first at the Volkstheater, then, from 1895, at the Burgtheater. She created several roles for Henrik Ibsen and Arthur Schnitzler. The stormy love affair she had with the latter inspired him to write his play "La Ronde" (Der Reigen). In 1905, she moved back to Berlin, playing at the Deutsches Theater under the direction of Max Reinhardt. Sandrock also performed in more than 140 movies, starting with a short silent movie in 1911 ("Marianne, ein Weib aus dem Volk"). She made her last two movies in 1936, a year before her death at age 74.
