Sam Steinberg

The unofficial artist in residence at Columbia University and the Bronx's contribution to the art brut quasi-movement of Jean Dubuffet. The former ice cream vendor worked prolifically in magic marker on cardboard with occasional forays into magic marker on cloth and was popular with the Columbia community for his drawings of birds, snakes and mermaids and for his low prices. His sister Pauline colored his drawings. The above is paraphrased from liner notes by Peter Frank on the back cover of Friends. Sam was said to be 70 years old at the time the liner notes were written in 1973.
