Об исполнителе:
Dutch accordionist; accordion world champion 1953 and 1954. Born October 1, 1912 in Amsterdam. Died January 8, 1992 in Amsterdam. Meijer became a professional musician as early as age 14 when he joined a group called "Van Dijks Origineele Volendammers" that performed in Volendam costume. In 1928, he joined another group, the "Four Serenaders", that performed in sailor suits and round glasses without lenses and made several recordings. In second half of the 1930s, as part of Theo Uden Masman's "De Ramblers", Meijer began to play Swing. At the end of the decade, he briefly formed a trio with the brothers Ab and Jochem de Molenaar, but then he started a solo career, for a while performing in his own "American Palace" café on the Nieuwendijk and in other Amsterdam cafés. In 1946, after liberation, Meijer had the opportunity to record a few sides for the Swiss label Elite Special. His "Rhapsody in Blue" medley was internationally successful and led the Dutch branch of Decca to contract several recordings from Meijer with his own Quintet Johnny Meyer. In 1950, he successfully toured the United Kingdom with a sextet, and in 1951, he won a Paris competition where he had to perform a work by Johann Sebastian Bach and was crowned "Roi d'Accordéon". After that, Meijer became a staple on Dutch radio, mostly playing pop and dance music with the ensembles of Tom Erich and Jan Corduwener. A highlight during this time, however, were his 1955 duet recordings with British jazz accordionist Tito Burns. After the 1950s, radio work began to dry up, and Meijer performed again mostly in Amsterdam cafés and at private parties. Apart from playing the accordion, Meijer also composed a number of songs, including "Polka in C", "Conchita", and "Valse De Paris ". In addition, he is the grandfather of pop singer Eva Simons.
