Emily L. Woody

An educator and civil rights leader, Woody was a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District who created an innovative recorded learn-to-read package called Phonetic Rock, which taught children and adults to read within a short time. Woody wrote 32 songs for the reading program, and also wrote and recorded the narration. She is the mother of jazz singer Claudia Thompson (2).
