American photographer (b. 7 December 1932, Boston, Massachusetts). Paul Caponigro is widely regarded as one of the leading landscape photographers in the United States, with numerous accolades and prestigious awards, including two Guggenheim Fellowships, three National Endowment For The Arts grants, and the Royal Photographic Society's Honorary Fellowship (2001). Caponigro's photographs are in permanents collections at the Whitney Museum Of American Art, Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, Norton Simon Museum, San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art and other notable museums and galleries. Paul Caponigro studied music at Boston University's College of Music in 1950 before deciding to focus on photography; he studied with Minor White and attended the California School of Fine Art. (Caponigro remained a dedicated pianist, considering music training essential to his photographic practice.) In 1958, Caponigro's debut solo exhibition happened at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. He taught photography part-time at Boston University in the 1960s, also consulting Polaroid Corporation on technical research. Caponigro co-founded the "Association of Heliographers," one of the most influential artistic cooperatives in New York, with Marie Cosindas, William Clift and Walter Chappell. Between 1973 and 1993, Caponigro lived in New Mexico.
