When asked by interviewers why he doesn't particularly listen to smooth jazz, Hightower replied, "That's how music becomes stale. You have to listen to what you enjoy as an artist, but that shouldn't necessarily determine what you make or who you are as an artist. I listen to enjoy, not to study. That's why I don't really listen to smooth jazz. I just love making it."
