Dementia Precox

Experimental, Industrial Noise band from Dayton, Ohio. Dementia Precox was formed on January 12, 1980 by Beavercreek High School friends Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover and Rodger Revlon aka David Mench. Rodger Revlon aka David Mench had just finished a short stint with "The Occupants" and Dayton Ohio's first punk band "The Rulers" that only performed in public two or at the most three times. Rodger Revlon aka David Mench at that time was known as Waggie and released a couple of crude packaged cassette tapes of industrial noise under the name "Lead Pencil" with his Cambridge Ohio friend Kevin Lea. September of that year the Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover and Rodger Revlon aka David Mench released their first industrial music cassette product in a ziplock baggie with a xeroxed paper insert; Dementia Precox; :The Not So Hidden Persuaders" in a very limited edition. Soon after, the duo recruited two more members, Max Noise aka Timothy Nye and Troy Boyahue, aka Chris Green of the local band, The Occupants. Along with their fifth member Syd (a wax dummy head), the new line-up went into the studio and recorded four tracks: "Mines", "Dead On 2 Legs Luncheonette", "Hours", and "Car Pools Save Gas". The former two were released as a two track single in March of 1981. During the next few months, co-founder Rodger Revlon; aka David Mench was told to leave the band and was replaced by David Paul. Rodger Revlon aka David Mench then relocated to New Orleans La. and the San Francisco Ca. where he did an industrial performance art show at Club Foot with Eric Nunn under the name Sublimation. He also performed on stage several times in SF with the Toxic Reasons supplying saxophone to two songs, "Ghost Town" and "White Noise" , He later moved to Valdese North Carolina where he opened a record store called Play It Again Records and also an art gallery called "New Window Gallery". He started a record label called Waggletone records. He performed on and released a 7" record on Waggletone records under the name "Flip'N'Boogers with Dennis Schlichter. To date there are 21 releases on Waggletone records by various bands. By September of 1982, Dementia Precox had completed a mini lp, SCHP, which acquired international attention for the band. The contributions from Rodger Revlon were either deleted or subdued. In 1983, the band relocated to San Francisco, California but broke up by the end of the year. The band would eventually revive and relocate back to Dayton, Ohio with three members of the former line-up, Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover, Max Noise aka Timothy Nye, and Troy Green. In 1984, they added Greg Stout on percussion and Ed Lacy on synthesizers and percussion. Eventually, Stout, Lacy, and Green left. Green was replaced by Dennis Schlichter. Pam Adams joined the band later that September on synthesizers and percussion. After a short stint, Dennis Schlichter then formed Lead Pencil, Flaming Negroes and MOM. In 1986, Gyn Cameron totally revamped the band by incorporating computer based sequencing technology and a powerful, new analog synthesizer called the Oberheim Matrix 12 into the 'Dementia' sound. He also rebuilt the band from the ground up by recruiting new guitarist, Eric Purtle, and new metal percussionist/synthesist, Royse Robbins. This new direction landed Dementia's sound somewhere between the Industrial dance sound of WaxTrax! Records and New Wave Gothic Pop. Hints of vintage SPK were also present. Dementia Precox as a band officially broke up in January 1990, almost ten years to the date of it's inception. Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover, however, continued to work solo on Dementia Precox material by providing soundtracks for theatre, for a ballet of Ballet de Jeunesse, a performance art collaboration with Dr. Kent Seidel called, "The Construction Zone", and made contributions to a film by Julia Reichert called Emma And Elvis. In 1993, he released a 12" single on the New Worlds Records label entitled, "Dirty Naked & Wet". In the Spring of 1995, Dementia Precox played a reunion concert in Dayton, Ohio with the original 1986 line-up of Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover , Eric Purtle, and Royse Robbins. The band continued to play concerts for the next year and then faded away once more. In October of 2007, Dementia Precox returned one last time with the highly anticipated line-up from 1981: Gyn Cameron aka Gregory Stover, Rodger Revlon aka David Mench, Max Noise aka Timothy Nye, and Troy Boyahue aka Chris Green. Also recruited for the line-up were previous guitarist, Eric Purtle, and a drummer, Jason Himes. The original, reformed Dementia Precox, who had not played together on stage since 1982, performed live in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 26, 2007 to a crowd of adoring fans. On October 31, 2007, Dementia Precox played their final concert in Dayton, Ohio. Soon after, the band split up and stated that they will not be reforming. On September 24, 2011, Gyn Cameron died taking with him his soul and vision of Dementia Precox. His genius will be sorely missed. Chris Green aka Troy Boyahue passed away Aug 15 2014. Max Noise aka Timothy Nye passed away March 30th 2017. Rodger Revlon aka David Mench returned to using his given name on a 6 song cd ep some of which was recorded in Negril Jamaica at Chop Chop Productions on Waggletone records; WAG0021 "Juice Juice" released in 2020!
