Classical british trumpeter, trumpet soloist and trumpet pedagogue Murray Greig’s musical education began under the guidance of his father whilst at junior school in Leicestershire. He played for many years with the Loughborough (Youth) Band as well as the NYBBGB and the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra. In 1984 he entered the Royal Northern College of Music to study the trumpet with Howard Snell, during which time he played principal trumpet with the European Community Youth Orchestra. He was able also to keep up his love of brass bands, playing flugelhorn for Fodens (as well as occasionally helping out some of their rivals!) Murray GreigHe joined the Orchestra of the Royal Ballet in 1988 before returning north to take up his current position of principal trumpet with the Orchestra of Opera North in 1989. Since then he has also appeared with many of the other major orchestras and ensembles in the UK and Europe (RPO, ROH, LSO, Philharmonia, CBSO, BSO, BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, RLPO, BBCSSO, RSNO Scottish Opera, Ensemble Modern, Bergen Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic) performing around the world under such luminary conductors as Sir Georg Solti, Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis and with artists such as Pavarotti, Bryn Terfel, Maxim Vengerov. Murray's playing can be heard on many orchestral and operatic recordings on labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos, Naxos, Decca, Signum, Telarc and Hyperion. In addition his orchestral activities, he has enjoyed the opportunity to perform as soloist with the Orchestra of Opera North as well as the Goldberg Ensemble, NCO, Manchester Camerata, Orchestra of the Golden Age (original instruments), RNCM Wind Orchestra, Brass Band and Brass Ensemble. As well as performing the major Baroque and Classical concertos, Murray gave the orchestral premiere of Arthur Butterworth’s Trumpet Concerto “Alla Veneziana” with the Orchestra of Opera North under Martyn Brabbins. He has performed trumpet and organ recitals with Simon Lindley, Gordon Stewart and Jonathan Scott and as a chamber musician, has been involved in recitals and recordings with Yorkshire Classic Brass, The Brass Quintet of Opera North, RPO Brass Quintet, Orfeo Trumpet Consort, The London Trumpet Sound, The Golden Section (formerly The Wallace Collection), Great Northern Brass and the RNCM Faculty Brass Ensemble. Education plays a large part in Murray's life and he is Senior Tutor in Trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he has taught since 1990, as well as teaching the trumpet at Chetham’s School of Music, Huddersfield University and as Trumpet Tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He has worked as External Examiner at conservatories and universities in the UK and Europe, and has adjudicated many solo competitions including BBC Young Musician of the Year.
