John Phillips (23)

John Phillips (b. 1948) is an American harpsichord maker and organologist specializing in antique instruments study and restoration. Since 1975, he has run an independent workshop, John Phillips Harpsichords, in Berkeley, California. Phillips grew up in Southern California and first discovered harpsichords during his undergraduate studies at the University Of California Santa Cruz when John assembled the first instrument from a kit in 1969. He began learning harpsichord with Mark Kroll while majoring in German literature and music. John earned his Master's degree in musicology at UC Berkeley and further studied harpsichord with Laurette Goldberg and Alan Curtis (2); he is self-taught as the restorer and instrument maker.
