Elizabeth Knight was born in Centralia, Washington. She studied music at the University of Washington where she graduated B.A. in English literature. She received an M.A. in Slavic Studies from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Charles University, Czechoslovakia, where she studied on an exchange scholarship from the Institute of International Education. Miss Knight has recorded an album of Folk songs from Czechoslovakia for Folkways Records (FW 6919). She sings in the collection of lullabies, Golden Slumbers, for Soundbook and has recorded with several folk groups. Miss Knight has also appeared on TV in New York and on radio and the concert stage here and abroad. The granddaughter of a Methodist Minister, Elizabeth Knight became familiar, as a child, with many of the hymn tunes used by the Suffragettes. In the church where she sang in the choir, the traditional accompaniment to these hymns was piano and organ. Her collection of songs dealing with the participation of women in the struggle for democratic rights and procedures reflects her great interest in the subject. -notes taken from "Songs of the Suffragettes" Folkways Records FH 5281.
