Monica Buckland Hofstetter

Swiss-British operatic music director and conductor born in 1965 in Exeter, UK. Buckland has the British and Swiss citizenship and was educated in Cambridge, Basel and in Aspen, Colorado. In the 1990s, she moved to Czech Republic, where she conducted the The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic. For 16 years, she was musical director of Ars Cantata Zürich. In 2015, she became musical director of the New Tyneside Orchestra. In 2020, she moved to Australia, and started as musical director of the Balmain Sinfonia. Buckland won a couple of prizes for her work, had dozens of guest appearances, lectureships and temporary leadership roles at festivals. She is also active for women in music and is board member of the International Alliance for Women in Music.
