ORANGEY have been active in Tokyo since the early 90's veering from shoe-gazing dreamy pop to the mid-90's return to 60's / 70's sharp songwriting and in the new millennium have incorporated a blend of electro-pop with alternative music stylings. Steve and Akemi (founders of Orangey) were born in a swimming pool of enthusiasm for eclectic music. Brief Historyonix: Steve, Akemi, and former Rei (founders of Orangey) were born in a swimming pool of enthusiasm for eclectic music. Steve (British/Hungarian) had his grounding in a minimalist electro pop band back in the UK; writing, arranging and producing artists from the age of 19. Two tracks of his appeared on a South London compilation (via PINNACLE) and he wrote songs and instrumentals for film, Modern Dance, and Fringe Theatre. One of his first songs utilized the first available home-use Sampler, for UK engineer Paul Gomersall (Echo and The Bunnymen, George Michael, Kate Bush, ZTT artists, Genesis, etc.) which featured for a U.K. Electronic music magazine (Paul, now producing in Australia is once again collaborating with Steve on Orangey tracks). After a move to Japan, Steve worked as a session vocalist/guitarist for PITT INN, Tokyo. Singing & lyricist on TV commercials for SHISEIDO, XEROX, etc., and on arrangements for single releases via TOKUMA JAPAN. Later in 1992, Steve met the witty and perceptive: AKEMI (Japanese) who played bass in her high school band and showed a fondness for post-punk artists and the melodic pop tradition of The Beatles, The Kinks, etc. while being quite an accomplished Blues pianist. For over a decade, Orangey have had numerous and regular gigs around Tokyo and held 'Club Orangey' featuring guest filmmakers, Dancers, Performance artists, and other musical groups. In the mid-90s, they worked on an ex-pat charity compilation of Japanese and International bands, thru 'Global Vision'. Steve assisted bands in production for two compilation albums, featuring music from Orangey, and gigged at mixed media events (Design Festa to 'UK sound') while releasing their first (Japan only) domestic album. This paired later with tracks on the WORLD WIDE KIND compilation series, saw national distribution and various radio airplay. Now as one of the team of songwriters on Earth Academy, Steve with the band Orangey are getting ready for the UK! – It’s been a long time coming and we wish them the best of Bwwwwitttish luck!
