Recording engineer specializing in two-track location work. David Jones (also known as Dave Jones and David B. Jones) began his career in the early 1950’s in Yellow Springs, Ohio, as owner and manager of Empirical (2) Recording and Empirical Sound recording company, recording traditional jazz for the label. Late 1950's he became Chief Engineer at Elektra Records, his duties included taping all sessions under the direction of Jac Holzman, supervising engineering personnel, maintenance and quality control. In 1960 Jones quit Elektra and began his freelance recording career. Riverside Records sent him to New Orleans in 1961 to record Black traditional jazz musicians for a projected series of albums to be called “New Orleans—The Living Legends.” He preferred on-location recordings for small independent labels of ethnic and classical music and occasionally jazz and never recorded rock or pop music.
