John Marinus Kuypers, b. 1900 November 15, in Rotterdam - d. 1993 July 19, in New Orleans, the dutch-born conductor, music teacher, he studied organ and vocal music while attending a local public school, and moved to the United States at the age of 14. He gained American citizenship at the age of 20 and went on to Carleton College until 1923 while attending a prep school at Hope College. He attended the City University of New York summer course in 1924 and the Columbia University summer course in 1925. Meanwhile, from 1914 to 1932, he personally continued to be a private professor of organ and vocal music, and also studied violin under Henry van de Graf, piano under Marie Throws, and viola under Jenny Coolen and Paul LeMay. From 1920 to 1926 he worked as a member of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and from 1926 to 1932 he was a member of the Koif String Quartet. From 1928 to 1932 he was the music director of Hamline University, and from 1942 to 1947 he taught at Cornell University's Faculty of Music. From 1938 to 1940, he appeared as a guest conductor in the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra. From 1942 to 1947 he was the conductor of the Glee Club at Cornell University, and from 1947 he moved to the University of Illinois, where he conducted the orchestra and choir of the university. As a music educator, in addition to the above universities, from 1930 to 1932 University of Iowa summer course of, Minnesota State Teacher's College in 1940, from 1940 until 1942 University of Idaho, in 1949 the University of Washington served as a visiting lecturer at the University.
