Victoria Elliott

British Soprano who was active 1940s-1970s. Born Gateshead-on-Tyne, Co. Durham 1923. Died London, 22 February 1986. She joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company in 1944 and was promoted to principal soprano from 1945-7. She joined the Sadlers Wells Opera Company in 1952 and quickly began singing leading roles in company productions. At a concert given in the Dorchester Hotel, London, she shattered a number of wine glasses with her top note. She tried and failed to repeat the feat on the BBC TV, but received 21 broken wine glasses from letter writers, complaining that she had ruined their glassware.
