UK mastering / lacquer cutting engineer. Started his career in the mid 1960s at R.G. Jones Studios, before joining Pye Studios in 1966 as a tape-op and then vinyl disc cutting engineer. After stints at PolyGram and CBS Records – where he worked on both ‘pop’ and classical product – Bill co-founded Tape One in 1972. In the 1980s Foster was a Board member of the Association of Professional Recording Services (APRS) and head of its Technical Committee, and also played an active role in the AES/Audio Engineering Society's Digital Standards Committee. Nowadays he is a Governor of the AES and a member of the Distinguished Engineers Audio Federation. Records cut by him at Pye Studios can be identified by △F, ♢F and ✳F. The triangle indicates that the cutting took place in the Scully Stereo suite (until 1967) and then in the Neumann SX68 suite (since 1967). The diamond indicates that the cutting took place in the Westrex Scully stereo suite (until 1974) and from 1974 onwards in the Neumann SX74 suite. The star indicates that the cutting took place in the Westrex Scully suite, operative until ca. 1974.
