Hästköttskandalen (HKS) is an audiovisual quartet comprised of Swedish and American composers and musicians (Ellen Arkbro, Marta Forsberg, Maria W Horn, Kali Malone, and formerly Elsa Bergman (left in 2014)). HKS was formed in spring 2013 and has since been featured by Sveriges Radio P2, Art’s Birthday Party, Norberg Festival, iDEAL Recordings, RANK, Statensmusikverk, Fylkingen 80 år Jubileum, Geiger, SEKT, and EMS Elektronmusikstudion. On February 16, 2015 the group released their debut vinyl record Spacegirls, 40 minutes of live music recorded in a disbanded morgue underneath Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm and released on Fylkingen Records. The music is an array of art rock, slow wave, and neo- psychedelia. The ensemble utilyzes real-time video feedback and analog film manipulation, just intonation, improvisation, and various synthesis methods. A defining characteristic of Hästköttskandalen’s music is the equal union of sound gleaning from acoustic string instruments, electric guitars, and an 8mm projector. The mix produces a vast sound-mass suspended in timeless stasis. Their long musical process reveals layers of harmonics with rotating rhythmical cogs, its colour and iridescence calmly transforming.
