Boris Otterdam is a West Australian born musician, label manager, promoter/organiser, former radio show host and podcast festival curator. He has lived and toured around Australia and played in, played for, DJed, collaborated with various bands and producers, curated and hosted events, remixed for and managed bands and producers, self published zines, written for and assisted in designing Australian music websites, blogs and various publications, run a podcast station, released cassette compilations, organized and promoted punk rock, noise, breakcore, hardcore, goth, industrial, grindcore and indie shows in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. His radio escapades from 2004-2013 consisted of hosting and co-hosting the final incarnation of The System Corrupt Radio Show on 2serfm Sydney, Illegal Frequencies on 2serfm Sydney, Illegal Frequencies on RRRfm Melbourne and Fuck You and Yours and Brass Knuckles on RRRFM Melbourne. At the age of 11 in 1989 he began experimenting with making audio collage cassette recordings, starting the Perth grindcore/noise band "Mindless Shit" alongside childhood friend Tyron Collyer at the age of 16 in 1994 as a terrible drummer/vocalist and industrial noise/grindcore wannabe. In 1998 as a promoter and organizer for the Perth Punk Rock Scene, he began experimenting with analogue noise and soundscapes as a member of Perth noise band "Analogue Sea Otter" originally formed with Ben Louthean who he met in art school. Analogue Sea Otter disbanded in 2000, with their first and only live show. Following this Boris started a short lived label for his own recordings "Noistruct Recordings" hosting a single CD alongside friend, Adam Clarke (The Last Ninja) which led to The Last Ninja suggesting a name change to 8-Bit Recordings, leading Boris to adopt the name Noistruct as his primary project name. 8-Bit Recordings became Perth's first breakcore/experimental label officially co-founded alongside fellow artists The Last Ninja and Deadcode in early 2000. Aside from releases, Boris was responsible for organizing the earliest breakcore and drill'n'bass shows in Perth, beginning with VOID at The Rosemount Hotel (which was known to host the earliest gigs of the solo project of Rob Swire, Anscenic) Noistruct began playing live in June 2001 and in 2002 was briefly a two piece noise/digital hardcore act collaborating with Perth noise producer Peteor Polteargami and then again becoming a more breakbeat oriented, digital hardcore project with Perth now Melbourne based DJ Sensi. By late 2002 it was back to being a solo electronic project again. 8-Bit Recordings left Perth in 2003, relocating to Melbourne Victoria and continued until May 2014 at one point moving to Brisbane, Queensland. The label was book-ended with one final release, a double vinyl compilation showcasing the primary artists of 8-Bit Recordings and a few guests. Since 2014 Boris has run the Australian independent record label ENDE Records. He wrote for the Australian music website "I Probably Hate Your Band" briefly from 2014-2016. In the following years, from 2018-2020 he co-ran the US internet label Coma Recordz, until original founder Ras Edwards' untimely death in October 2020 thus putting a bookend on the label. From 2020 until 2021 he managed and co-managed livestreamed podcast events on the European podcast station, Digital Gabba Radio, mainly the "After Midnight" Livestream Podcast Festival. He returned to Western Australia in 2020 where he continues to produce, promote, and release music. Aside from his main alias, Noistruct, Boris produces various other styles of electronic music under different aliases, writes, draws cartoons, and on occasion assists in organizing local shows in Perth's music scene. He currently also plays in the band "The Day The Music Died" with others from the Perth punk and experimental scene.
