Popular salon music ensemble founded by Russian immigrant Harry Horlick (1896-1970) and performing in gypsy costumes. The band came under the sponsorship of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company after a company executive discovered it while touring the New York radio station WEAF in winter 1923. Renamed A. & P. Gypsies, the band was featured in a very popular series of Monday night broadcasts introduced by its theme music, "Two Guitars," starting on March 17, 1924. The show moved to NBC in 1927 and continued, in different variations, until 1936.
