Bruno Calvo (1991) is a young trumpet player from Cádiz, Spain. Since he was born he found himself surrounded and influenced by a rich musical atmosphere because his father was trumpet player, too. He started playing at the age of 5 and with only 7 years he started to study the classical trumpet at the conservatory of his hometown until the age of eighteen. He also took additional private lessons and attended music workshops with Joe Magnarelli, Jerry Bergonzi, Dick Oatts or Bruce Barth. Presenting excellent grades, he was accepted at the most important conservatory in Spain in 2009: The: ESMUC in Barcelona (Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya). Here he completed his Bachelor degree in jazz trumpet with musicians such as: Mireia Farres, Toni Belenguer, Matthew Simon, Albert Bover and Lluís Vidal. In 2013 he moved to Amsterdam where he continued studying the Master degree in the CvA (Conservatorium van Amsterdam) with musicians such as Ruud Breuls, Simon Rigter, Yaniv Nachum, Jasper Blom or Joris Roelofs. Still living in Amsterdam until today, Bruno can look back to excellent formation taking lessons with famous artists such as the trumpet player Avishai Cohen, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joe Magnarelli, Terell Staford, Terence Blanchard, Mireia Farres, Bobby Shew and Willem van der Vliet. He keeps his musical career active by playing in personal projects like the Bruno Calvo Quartet and Trempera! Although he also plays in many different projects as sideman like the BvR Flamenco Big Band, the Daahoud Salim Quintet, Tarquim, Lluc Casares Octet RED and one of the most important jazz productions in the Netherlands; The New York Round Midnight. He furthermore has collaborate at the well-known Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Moreover, he has taken part in different recordings as a sideman. The most relevant ones are Tarquim, Mar Endins (2016); Daahoud Salim Quintet, La Llamada (2016); Lluc Casares, Red (2015); Pablo Martínez Flamenco- Jazz Band, De Madrugada (2015); Life on Mars (2015); the BvR Flamenco Big Band, Jaleo Holandés (2014) and Luz de Luna (2017); Dr. Ring Ding Ska-Vaganza, Piping Hot (2012). From the participation in many contest it must be emphasized the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award 2014 where he won the 2nd prize and also the 1º prize to the “Best Monk Arrangement” with the band Trempera!, with whom also were finalists at the Dutch Jazz Competition 2014. The MeerJazz Festival’s International Big Band Competition where he won the 1st and 2nd prize with the BvR Flamenco Big Band (2014 and 2015). Lately they also won the Keep an Eye Jazz Records Awards 2015. Recently he has won the Contest for Groups of 40th Getxo Jazz Festival 2016 with Daahoud Salim Quintet and also the Keep an Eye Jazz Awards “The Records” 2016 with Trempera!.
