Noel Taylor was born in Vancouver in 1917, the son of a professional musician and the grandson of a Doctor of Music. While still in Canada he was taught the cello by the Russian violinist Gregori Garbovitsky, a pupil of Glazunov and Leopold Auer. After winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where he studied with Ivor James, he played in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as principal cellist, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Covent Garden Opera Orchestra and many London chamber orchestras notablt the Boyd Neel. He also gave recitals in Canada and England. His primary interest has always been unaccompanied Bach and has even extended to performances of the D minor violin Partita on the cello in its original key. Noel Taylor plays a magnificent cello by Giovanni Battista Rugeri of Brescia (made in 1726 which makes it also exactly the same age as the Bach suites) bequesthed to him by his aunt Carrodus Taylor.
