Musical America

Musical America is the oldest American publication on classical music, available as a printed magazine from 1898 till 1992, and online since 1999. In 1921, Musical America published the first annual "Guide," later renamed the 'International Directory of the Performing Arts' and the 'Musical America Directory.' In 1964, Musical America's publisher sold the magazine and the annual directory to High Fidelity Magazine, a subsidiary of Billboard Publications, owners of Billboard magazine. For the next twenty-two years, High Fidelity published 'Musical America' as an additional insert in the subscription-only edition. In 1986, ABC Consumer Magazines, the High Fidelity publisher, decided to revive Musical America as an independent monthly edition to compete against the 'Opus' (1984–'88) magazine. In 1998, the Musical America Directory's publisher launched the [u]musicalamerica.com[/u] website.
