LUMINA is a trio formed by three veteran Brazilian musicians who have been active for over three decades. Bassist Sizão Machado is widely known for his work with the likes of Chet Baker, Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque and Airto Moreira. Gguitarist Johnny Murata is quite renowned in world music circles (he is also a skilful sitar player), while drummer Fabio Fernandes has performed with important Brazilian musicians such as HERMETO PASCOAL. The project was initially born as a guitar-and-drums duo, which Machado joined after having heard some of their recordings. The trio's debut album, Lumina Project, released in the first half of 2009 on the Brazilian label Som do Darma (distributed in Europe by Musea Records), was based on their free improvisations in the studio. The band have chosen the 'fractals' as their symbol, representing the apparently fragmented nature of their music, which after repeated listens shows a sort of organic structure.
