Springfield, Missouri Clawhammer began playing together in 2011, with the idea of combining traditional Ozarks sounds (such as banjos and harmony singing) with electronic tools (synths, pedals, mixers), funk syncopation, and pop structure. They utilize a unique setup that approximates a dub/selector, with intricate layering and echoing of loops, in real time, from real instruments. They never use pre recorded loops, preferring to sample themselves live, onstage. Their songs generally deal with the darker side of human nature, in the vein of murder ballads. All the members play multiple instruments, often in one song.
