Joseph E. Maddy (1891–1966) was a pioneering American music educator. He studied violin and used to play in the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra before accepting a teaching position at the Morton High School in Richmond in 1920, where Maddy was commissioned to revive the outstanding school and community music program. In 1924, Maddy became a head of the Music Department at The University Of Michigan and music supervisor of Ann Arbor public schools. He developed one of the few conducting programs in the country and organized National High School Orchestra performances at the Music Supervisors National Conference (MSNC) in Detroit and Dallas. He founded the National High School Orchestra Camp (renamed National Music Camp three years later) in 1928. The camp had been affiliated with the University of Michigan in 1942. Joseph E. Maddy also established the Interlochen Arts Academy boarding high school in 1962. The Camp and Academy are now parts of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, which also include College of Creative Arts, public radio and performing arts series.
