Primax was the "nom de plume" of producer/remixer Ian D Smith who worked full time for Media Records UK in the early 1990s. He met label boss Peter Pritchard through his writing for the American Dance Music magazine "Dance Music Authority" (aka DMA) while DJing at "Europe's biggest gay nightclub" Heaven under the name "Ian D" for 4 years in the 90s at "A Saturday Night at Heaven" in the early 1990s.Ian played the main floor every Saturday night for the best part of 4 years. Before starting at Heaven Ian promoted his own night at The Paradise Club in Islington and as part of the club promotion produced a monthly music review newsletter "Prime Cuts" which was distributed through record stores in London, Birmingham, Blackpool and Edinburgh. The tag line for the mag was "Prime Cuts - To The Max". The name "Primax" for Ian's remix and production work came from shrinking that tagline down to a single word! Most Primax mixes were produced with Media label boss Peter Pritchard who worked mostly with Ian and Stu Allan (under the name "Clock") However Ian also produced four remixes (one unreleased) with famous ex-Stock Aitken Waterman producers Phil Harding and Ian Curnow under the name "Primax and The Power Syndicate" after being hired by their manager Tom Watkins to help his band 2wo Third3 and then being rehired several times when a radio hit of his remix of a 2wo Third3 track gave them their first (and only) Top 20 hit.
