John was born in Liverpool, England. He joined a band called "Come in Tokio" in 1981 that was led by Phil Wylie. They did 3 John Peel and a Kid Jensen Sessions for BBC Radio 1 and supported Elvis Costello, The Beat in 1982. John left in 1983 and formed a band with friend John Gillin called "The Persuaders" and continued to record BBC Radio Sessions for John Peel and Janice Long - Tony Upham sang with the band from 1984 to 1985 and John Kennedy from 1986 to 1989 - Siobhan Maher Kennedy sang with the band before she formed her own band with Persuaders drummer Paul Speed called "River City People" - John also did some keyboards in 1987 for River City People as well. John also was editor and publisher of the famed music fanzine "The Garden Party" which featured exclusive material with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Icicle Works, The Farm, Cook Da Books etc The Persuaders broke up at their height in 1989 after being signed to Sting's manager Kim Turner. John took a very long break but continued to write and record but not professionally - Sometimes under the project name URGE. Again being featured on BBC Radio with his song "Haunted" In the late 2014 John was joint winner of the Liverpool Songwriting Challenge which kickstarted a new career as solo singer-songwriter of Americana Folk Country Music releasing 6 albums to date (2023). He occasionally plays with his band 'John Jenkins and the James Street Band', also releasing a couple of albums of songs sung by others under the name 'John Jenkins and That Sure Thing', Electronic music under the name "Midnight in Manhatten' and a Musical "A New York Romance"
