Lands Farther East

Mark Detrick and Ryan Soukkala started Lands Farther East with another gentleman, named Eisa, in Lewis County, Washington in the late 90s. After moving to Bellingham, in 1999, Mark and Ryan met Josh Goodman at the Show Off Gallery. They were looking for a bass player and Josh said he would be interested in trying out. A few days later, Josh called Mark and admitted that he had been lying in order to get to try out with the band. Though he owned a bass guitar, Josh was hoping to add a second guitar to the band instead. After trying out a few bass players, the band decided to stay with the format that was working well for them, two guitars, drums, and some vocals here and there. The band played their first show in the same room that it formed, The Show Off Gallery. The show was in July of 2000. HIM and Vermilion played as well. To make a long story short, over the course of its existence, Lands Farther East recorded one EP, one full length, and two 7” inch records. The band went on three tours of varying success and played a wide variety of shows in and around Bellingham. Lands Farther East played their last show at the G.A.F. Church in Bellingham in February of 2004. They played their last show with The Narrows, Racetrack, and The Americas. Mark has also played in : Treasures, The Sunset Riders, Leaves Sleeves, Tombstones, and Rooftops. Ryan has also played in : Idiot Pilot (live drummer) Josh has played in : Treasures, Boat Influences: 60s folk and country, 70s prog-rock, 80s pop, 90s emo, and complicated guitar stuff from the new millenium and beyond.
