Dutch composer who wrote music for the guitar, born 25 May 1930 in The Hague, died 2 November 2007 in Zwolle. He was a self-taught guitarist until he played to Andrés Segovia in 1954 and was admitted to his masterclasses in Siena, Italy. Here he studied until 1959 and also met Alirio Díaz with whom he also took guitar lessons. Other important persons were Emilio Pujol, under whose guidance he studied vihuela and early music notation, and Wolfgang Wijdeveld with whom he took composition lessons. In the Netherlands, Van der Staak studied at the Maastricht Conservatory under the direction of the guitarist Hans Lutz Niessen.
