John M. Thomson (10 March 1926, Blenheim — 11 September 1999, Wellington) was a distinguished New Zealand musicologist, one of the early proponents of pre-Romantic classical repertoire in the XX century, best known as the founder of Early Music journal at Oxford University Press in 1973. Thomson studied at Victoria University Of Wellington, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in 1948. He had lived in England since the early 1960s, working as an editor for several magazines and publishers, including Faber & Faber, and studying recorder with Walter Bergmann. After returning to New Zealand, John Thomson was a research associate at the Stout Research Centre and The University Of Waikato. He accompanied Igor Stravinsky and Sir Michael Tippett on their New Zealand tours. In 1991, Victoria University Of Wellington awarded J.M. Thomson an honorary Ph.D.
