Born in New York on November 27 of 1906 as the son of Italian parients, Capicotto (also known as Phil Carpenter & Phil Capricotta) probably learned music as a child from his parents, and almost certainly went to any of the reputed New York conservatories, where he may have studied trumpet. Capicotto's first recordings were in August 18 of 1931 with Bert Lown's orchestra for Victor, with whom he stayed until the period between late May & mid June of 1933. From 1934, he often worked & recorded among others with Jack Shilkret & Russ Morgan (2) for the ARC group of labels (including Brunswick, Vocalion, Banner, Oriole, Melotone, Romeo, Perfect, Domino, etc.) & Decca. It was with Morgan for which Capicotto's work is more known, which also led him to his presence on an Original Dixieland Jazz Band session held on October 9 of 1935 for Vocalion & led by Morgan. Capicotto probably retired between the 60s & 70s, and moved to Palm Beach, Florida, where he stayed until his death that happened on March 11 of 1981.
