Philippe Bas (July 5, 1953 - December 9, 2011) was a French jazz pianist known for his talent in the stride piano style. Born in Paris, France, in 1953, he initially received a classical education before transitioning to jazz, particularly drawing inspiration from the music of legendary pianists Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. His career in jazz took off in 1975 when he began performing in various jazz ensembles, including accompanying renowned trumpeter Bill Coleman. Philippe Bas gained recognition for his piano skills and went on to join Olivier Franc's orchestra in 1986, performing at numerous festivals in France, Germany, and Sweden. In 1990, Philippe Bas released his album titled "Swing Rag and Blues," showcasing his mastery of stride piano and his love for traditional jazz styles. Over the years, he collaborated with fellow musicians, including drummer Daniel Bechet, son of the iconic Sidney Bechet, as a member of the band "The Feetwarmers." In 1997, Philippe Bas recorded a solo album featuring his own compositions for EMI Music France, demonstrating his prowess as a composer and solo artist. Additionally, he collaborated on an album with saxophonist Philippe Audibert titled "Hey There." Throughout his career, Philippe Bas was known for his performances at renowned Parisian jazz clubs such as the Slow Club, Le Caveau de la Huchette, Latitudes Saint Germain, and Le Méridien. He also displayed his passion for music by performing as a street musician in the vibrant streets of Paris.
