Subassa

Born in London UK Gary Subassa grew up into a totally non musical family and it was not until the age of 12 years that music entered his life. At school when he heard that a band was forming and nobody else wanted to be the bass player Gary offered himself to join. Having never played bass before in his life and not really knowing what a bass was it was going to be a steep hill to climb. However with the encouragement of fellow musicians Gary soon took to playing the bass and began to realise that it was a pivotal instrument in holding together the essential groove and melody of any group. In 1976 at 18 years of age punk rock exploded on the London scene and Gary was taken in its tide of energy and joined a group of anarchic travelling musicians and began touring. During this period he discovered the music of Miles Davis and after spending time exploring jazz and Motown genius James Jamerson Gary's bass playing mutated into a groove based punk/jazz.
