Об исполнителе:
LaVerne Holt was a blueswoman singer-songwriter. Holt recorded two songs with the producer Joe Davis (4) in 1955, "Mr. Black Man" and "If You Play You Must Pay." Both were recorded using a professional back-up band, including pianist Al Williams (12)—who also played piano on Holt's demo, Everett Barksdale on guitar, Bobby Donaldson on drums, Bill Pemberton on bass and Haywood Henry blowing baritone sax. The total cost of the session was 500 dollars. The two songs were release under the alias of Enyatta Holta, due to their political consciousness. The progressive lyrics of both songs—an early expression of black pride—, put Holt ahead of her time. Since then, both songs were released in different compilations credited to both Holt or Holtta.
