Bernard Shore

British viola player, author, and Professor of Viola. Born 17 March 1896 - Died 2 April 1985. He studied viola, organ, & composition at the Royal Academy of Music. From 1922 on he was an orchestral player, first with the Queen's Hall Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra (1921-1928), and, from 1930, as Principal Viola of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 1940 he left the BBC Symphony Orchestra to join the Royal Air Force. Shortly after the end of the war he retired from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and took on a professorship at the Royal College of Music. He was made a CBE in 1955.
