US actor and comedian, born Oct. 17, 1937 in Rainbow Falls, Hilo, Hawaii – died May 3, 2004, Hilo, Hawaii. He is remembered largely for his portrayal of Kono Kalakaua on the long-running television program Hawaii Five-O. Gilbert Kauhi was and initially became known as a singer who enjoyed adding humor to his routines. He embraced the nickname of Zulu (sometimes spelled as Zoulou) during high school, and he would use it professionally. After being let go from the show, he would continue to act in television shows and movies, and also do co-host work for telethons in Honolulu.
