Richard L. Saucedo is Director of Bands and Department Chairman (Emeritus) at the William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, having retired in 2013 after 31 years of public school teaching. He is also a Composer and Arranger for Marching Bands and Drum & Bugle Corps. He did his undergraduate work at Indiana University in Bloomington, and finished his master's degree at Butler University in Indianapolis. Under his direction, Carmel bands received numerous state and national honors in the areas of concert band, jazz band and marching band. Under his direction, the Carmel Wind Symphony has performed three times at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, performed at the Midwest Clinic and was named an Indiana State Champion. The Carmel Marching Band finished in the top ten at the Bands of America Grand National Championship for 15 consecutive years and was named BOA National Champions in 2005 and 2012. His marching bands were Indiana Class A State Champions four times and he was named Indiana Bandmasters Association’s “Bandmaster of the Year” for 1999 and “Outstanding Music Educator” for the state of Indiana in 2010, by the Indiana Music Educators Association. He was inducted into the Music for All Hall of Fame in 2015. Richard remains active and engaged with Bands Of America and Music for All serving as an Educational Consultant, Coordinator for MFA’s jazz programming and a Chief Judge for Bands Of America fall programs. He a freelance arranger and composer, having released numerous marching band arrangements, choral arrangements, and concert band and orchestral works. He is on the writing staff of Hal Leonard LLC. His compositions have been performed by middle school and high school bands all over the world, as well as by college and university groups. Nocturne, his first work for orchestra, was named most outstanding new composition at the 2009 National Orchestra Cup Festival at Lincoln Center. His most recent orchestra work, Essay #1, was premiered at the 2014 Midwest Clinic. Mr. Saucedo receives numerous commission requests, and will be releasing new works for university, high school and middle school bands throughout 2018-19. He is the author of two DVDs on rehearsing the marching band wind section, and is featured in two DVDs on concert band rehearsal techniques, all available at dynamicmarching.com. Richard travels around the world as an adjudicator, keynote speaker, clinician and guest conductor. He will appear in over 25 states during the 2018-19 school year. In July 2014, he was an adjudicator/clinician for the Singapore International Band Festival, and served as clinician and guest conductor at the Japan Band Clinic in May 2016. In September 2016, he presented at the Australian Band and Orchestra Clinic in Sydney. He was a featured clinician at the 2017 Midwest Clinic and the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association convention. He currently judges for Drum Corps International, and was the brass composer/arranger for the Chicago Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps (Rosemont, IL) from 2000-2008. The Cavaliers won five DCI World Championships during his tenure. He also spent four years as the brass composer/arranger for the Blue Stars Drum And Bugle Corps (La Crosse, WI). He is an educational consultant for Music for All and Bands Of America. He is a member of the Conn-Selmer Division of Education, and currently serves as assistant chief judge for Bands Of America marching band competitions. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for United Sound, an organization whose mission is to give special needs students a chance to experience the joy of instrumental music performance through peer mentoring.
