Nils Bäckström

Swedish opera (baritone) singer. He was a leading baritone at Malmö City Theater for most of his career, born January 16, 1913 in Trelleborg, died November 17, 2000 in Malmö. He studied for W Linke at the Conservatory in Copenhagen in 1934, was a student at the Opera School in 1940 and studied for Sixten Liedbergius and Joseph Hislop at the Stockholm Academy of Music. He was involved with the Stora Teatern in Gothenburg 1943–1947, Malmö Stadsteater 1947–1952, the Oscarsteatern in Stockholm 1952–1954 and Malmö Stadsteater from 1954 to the 1980s. The roles include Count Almaviva in Figaro's wedding, Rigoletto, Escamillio in Carmen, Iago in Otello and Gianni Schicchi.
