Ernie Goodson (1910-1995) was a highly regarded jazz clarinetist and saxophonist known for his exceptional talent and contributions to the world of Dixieland jazz. Born in 1910, he began his musical journey as a self-taught musician, with his first performance in the Pit Orchestra of the Tampa Theatre at the age of 17. In 1930, he moved to Miami, where he became an integral part of the local music scene. Over the years, he played at various iconic venues, including the Olympia Theatre (now the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts), Flagler Gardens, Biscayne Dog Track, and numerous Miami Beach hotels. Ernie Goodson's career took a significant turn in the late 1940s when he joined the Preacher Rollo Dixieland Band, a band that gained recognition in the music industry. After the band's breakup in 1960, he continued to perform, collaborating with prominent bandleaders like Ted Lewis, Dick Stabile (for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Television Show), and Skitch Henderson (on Steve Allen's Tonight Show). In 1968, Goodson embarked on a fruitful musical partnership with trumpeter Don Goldie. They played together at jazz festivals across the country, recorded eight albums, and their collaboration lasted until 1992. Ernie Goodson's music was not just about skill; he had a unique way of connecting with people. Described as "witty and charming" by his daughter Teresa Matthews, his warm and engaging personality left a lasting impression on those who had the pleasure of meeting him.
