(June 22, 1901 -- April 7, 1982) Professor of Voice at the University of Michigan, and Music Director of the U-M Men's Glee Club for more than 20 years. A veteran of 5,000 radio broadcasts, Duey earned a distinguished reputation as a professional singer during radio's heydey and appeared on many popular national shows before coming to the U-M in 1947. Under his direction, the U-M Men's Glee Club won recognition as the finest male chorus worldwide with first place wins in 1959 and 1963 at the International Musical Eisteddfod competition in Llangollen, Wales -- the first U.S. club to do so. Duey's Glee Clubs also toured Europe, and traveled around the world in 1967. Retiring from the U-M in 1970, Duey moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1979, three years prior to his death in 1982. Born in Macy, IN, Duey held A.B. and M.Mus. degrees from Indiana University and A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. He held a three-year scholarship at the Julliard School of Music; taught at the College of the City of New York and The Arthur Jordan Conservatory; and was head of the music department at Butler University. Author of the book 'Bel Canto In Its Golden Age'. Named to membership in the prestigious National Academy of Teachers of Singing, and elected as its president in 1967.
