Rachel Kaleiwahea

Born: July 26, 1891 in the Marquesas Islands Died: December 25, 1967 Rachel Kaleiwahea was Hawaiian, but was born in the Marquesas, because her grandparents (Naomi and James Kekela) were among the first Protestant missionaries of Hawaiian ancestry sent to the Marquesas Islands. The Huapala website's notation on the song "Aloha ʻIa ʻO Waianae," indicates that Rachel Kaleiwahea was the original composer of the song, but that Abigail Pililaʻau provided extensive editing to the lyrics.
