The Lim Family grew up in the Kohala area of the Island of Hawaiʻi. In the image from the group's "Sounds From Kohala" LP, the musicians from the lower left side and moving counter-clockwise are Mary Ann Lim, mother in the family who plays Ukulele; Elmer Lim Sr. who played Rhythm Guitar; Nani Lim (later Nani Lim Yap) who plays Tiple, Lorna Lim who plays Bass, and Elmer "Kohala" Lim who plays Lead Guitar often in slack key style, Ukulele, and Steel Guitar, and who now uses Sonny Lim as his performing name. Vocals feature the three females, all of whom sing both lead and harmony. The men also added backing vocals on some songs. The group has performed widely in the Kohala, Kamuela, and Kona areas and has released numerous albums. The group has also performed in other parts of Hawaii, parts of the mainland, and in Japan. Elmer Lim Sr. passed away in 1988. Nani Lim Yap is an award-winning kumu hula (hula troupe teacher/leader). Lorna and Sonny have released solo albums. 2012: Winner of a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award under the auspices of the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts.
