British classical double bass player, and Professor of Double Bass. Born 12 May 1872 in Faversham, Kent, England, UK - Died 10 March 1954 in Surbiton, South West London, England, UK. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London (1888-1892). He was a founder member of the London Symphony Orchestra (1904-1909). He then joined the Beecham Symphony Orchestra (1910-1916), and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, before becoming a founder member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1930. He retired from playing in 1940. He was Professor of Double Bass at the Royal College of Music (1902-1946). Younger brother of Alfred Hobday and brother-in-law of Ethel Hobday.
