Icelandic tenor vocalist, singing teacher and conductor, born in Reykjavík 24 Sept 1940. Father to Garðar Thór Cortes. Cortes completed soloist and singing teacher degrees from The Royal Academy of Music and Watford School of Music in England in 1968 and 1969. He was headmaster of the Music School in Seyðisfjörður 1969 – 1970, and in 1973 he founded Söngskólinn i Reykjavík (The Singing School in Reykjavík) and Kór Söngskólans Í Reykjavík (The choir of the Singing School in Reykjavík) which he has directed ever since. In addition to an international career as an opera singer, Cortes is also the founder of other Icelandic classical music institutions.
