He was a retired architect, having worked many years for Silling Associates, Inc. Dick was a member and a choir member of the former Central United Methodist Church, Charleston, for many years until the members merged with several other Methodist churches in the area and then became a member of Canaan United Methodist Church on Charleston's west side, where he was a current member and an active choir member. He enjoyed music and was a former member of the Kanawha Kordsmen, a well-known barbershop quartet in the Kanawha Valley area, and was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and the University of Cincinnati. Dick loved his recreational time and enjoyed being an official for Soap Box Derby Racing and was a founding member of Bolivar Clide and Ugly Irving, a musical group that penned the lyrics to the song "The Interstate Is Coming Through My Outhouse."
