The German choir was founded as Bachchor Würzburg in 1961 by the church music director Günter Jena, who was previously an assistant to Karl Richter in Munich. Jena initiated the Würzburger Bach Festival in 1968 and made the choir popular in the region. His successor was from 1974 Heribert Breuer. From 1979 to 2015 Christian Kabitz was cantor at the St. Johannis Kirche Würzburg and thus head of the choir and artistic director of the Würzburger Bachtage. His successor is Matthias Querbach. As the name implies, they have been singing choral works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
