Originally formed in 1999 by Stefane Goldman (guitars/programming), Ben Mosca (programming) and Alexis Mauri aka Alexkid (programming/production), Dubphonic’s public birth certificate is their remix of Linvall Thompson’s “Jah Jah Is A Guiding Star” released on “Select Cuts From Blood And Fire Chapter 2” (Echobeach 2000). They recorded their first album « Smoke Signals » in 2002 (released 2003) after a cult 12’’ for the Chicago-based label Guidance Recordings. From Le Monde to 20 Minutes, from Keyboards Magazine to Telerama reviews of the album – entirely instrumental – were unanimously positive and “Smoke Signals” soon became a music supervisor’s favorite with tracks being picked up for series such as Six Feet Under or Dexter. After a tour with Japanese band Audioactive and a handful of concerts and, while their remix of Tosca’s Orozco was being spun all around the world (and in Six Feet Under !), the band went back to the studio in late 2004 to work on what would become “Relight”… Not fully satisfied with the new recordings the band decided – with their label support – that time would not be an issue and it took them four years in-and-out of the studio to finalize the ten tracks included on “Relight”, four of which welcoming guest-vocalists Daniella D’Ambrosio (Nouvelle Vague, Aswefall), Céu, Liset Alea and Mau (Earthling). Released in 2009 to more critical acclaim (Télérama : “A work of craftsmanship where each sound has its place, each arrangement carefully designed and every silence mastered”), “Relight” was followed by the release of their remix of a Dub remix of Pink Floyd’s “The Great Gig In The Sky” for the project The Dubber Side Of The Moon (Easy Star Records 2010).
