Andreas Gutzwiller

Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) player and tutor born 1940 in Germany. He began the study of the Japanese shakuhachi flute with Araki Kodo V, then continued his studies in Tokyo with [a5911496]. In 1974 he received his Ph.D with a thesis on the history and music of the shakuhachi. In 1976 he became the first European to receive the title of master (shihan) and the master's name Fuyû. Since 1980, he has taught at the Musik-Akademie Basel (Music Academy Basel) and was Director of the Studio for non-European music of the Music Academy until 2005. In the Summer of 2004, he received a teaching position for ethnomusicology of the Musikwissenschaftliches Institut der Universität Basel (Musicology Institute of the University Basel).
