Janece Morgan, born Alice Mulks and later known as Alice Detrick, was born in Slaterville Springs, NY, on 17 July 1940 to Omar and Emma Mulks. She started performing country and rockabilly music professionally while a student at Ithaca High School, both as a solo artist and with the country band The Tune Twisters (4) of the Binghamton, NY area, with whom she played and sang regularly on radio stations WINR (Binghamton, NY) and WENE (Endicott, NY). Morgan's big break came at age 16, when she auditioned for Dusty Owens of the WWVA Jamboree and spent much of the summer of 1956 touring with him. It was Owens who gave her the stage name Janece Morgan, which he said came to him in a dream. Sometime after that tour, she dropped the alias and used her married name Alice Detrick as a performer and recording artist. She went on as an opening act for tours with Loretta Lynn, Roy Clark, Charley Pride, and The Charlie Daniels Band and performed with Lynn Anderson at the Halogaland Country Music Festival in Norway. For 20 years Morgan was known as the “FMCA Sweetheart,” accompanying the Family Motor Coach Association conventions around the United States. In 1985 she was inducted into the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame. As Janece Morgan she recorded several tracks in the 1950s for the label Marlee Record Co. in Trumansburg, NY, mostly in the country and rockabilly styles. As Alice Detrick, she had several releases including a single on ABC Records. She died on 22 September 2022 in Montour Falls, NY, at the age of 82.
